Fontaine des Innocents

7 reviews of Fontaine des Innocents

Central fountain

La Fontaine des Innocents, the fountain of the innocent, is in the square and the street of the same name, in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, in the heart of Les Halles. This ancient fountain was built between 1546 and 1549. It was moved several times before ending up in this square. Les Halles was the central market of the city, and also the Paris Cemetery. For obvious reasons of health, the dead were moved further away from the market, giving the neighborhood a more human feel. Today it has an important role because many people gather around it. People come to strike, to complain about the government, to ask for papers to illegal immigrants, but there are also street performers, jugglers, skate boarders.
