House of Rocks

The Casa de las Rocas, or Casa de les Roques, is the headquarters of the Museo del Corpus Christi (next to an annexed building). Its construction began in 1435 and was finished in 1447. This curious place must be really interesting to foreigners, who are not used to seeing these kinds of local traditions. The impressive dragon's head and the huge and ancient religious figures are frightful. This house was built by Pere el Ceremonios as a place to keep the processional carts, the figures, clothing's and objects related to the Corpus celebration. In this house lived the Capella de les Roques, who was the person in charge of guarding the works in restoration. In this house they also rehearsed the dances and mysteries of the celebration, everything supervised by the Capella de les Roques. This building has had different reforms and due to its proximity to the river, it has suffered each and every one of the floods of the city. It was restored in 1980 and it was able to shelter once again the processional carts in 1983. They later restored the annexed building of the 18th Century, to give this house more space. In the ground floor you will find the carts, elements of the symbology of the Corpus, the "giants" and the "figures with huge heads", and you can also contemplate explanatory panels of the processional history and some illustrative photographs of what this celebration is about.
