Poitiers Christmas Market

1 review of Poitiers Christmas Market

A family Christmas

Poitiers life seems to revolve around Charles De Gaulle Square, the hub of city life, a regular meeting place, a unifying element of collective activity. An emblematic, beautiful and cozy place like nowhere else. Located in the heart of Old Town, Charles De Gaulle Square exudes a quaint medieval flavor definitely enhanced by the presence of belt-framed houses with wooden beams that surround it and the ubiquitous silhouette of the magnificent church of Notre-Dame la Grande where the façade captures the focus of passers by.

Behind Notre Dame la Grande is the City Market, a legacy of the old outdoor fairs that were once held in the village square, and still are today, frequented by residents and people from nearby towns. The Mercado de Poitiers extends across the square every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning, flooding the singular space with odors, fragrances, colors and feelings that take us back to another era. Fruits, vegetables, flowers, meats and beverages are meticulously arranged in stalls, whose flirtatious charms are difficult to escape. The Magic of Christmas is installed at the Charles De Gaulle square shaped mini-farm where children will discover and enjoy a great time watching and feeding goats, horses, sheep, rabbits, geese, chickens and ducks and have the opportunity to walk around the city aboard a horse-drawn carriage.
