Spectacular Aragonese castle

Peracense Castle is 1 Km from the town of Peracense, on a rocky cliff about 1400 metres above sea level.

The spectacular thing about this castle is the rocky enclave in which it is situated and the natural fortress of escarpments and blocks of Rodena stone. These rocks, so characteristic of the surroundings, are a sandstone and a Triassic composite 245 million years old. This rock is very different because of its intense red colour and it is the same that is used in tiles and walls and the castle interiors, forming a complex which extends the natural shape of the lines of the castle with the rocky escarpments.

Castle on the rock

Its construction took advantage of the natural topography of the land. The fortress sits on a rocky extension of very steep rodena stone belonging to the southern end of the Sierra Menera, near to the San Ginés hill.

The site has been occupied since the end of the Bronze Age, being occupied again in the time of the Muslim occupation in the X and XI centuries. But it is in the Middle Ages when its strategic importance grew because of its border position between the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon and of the lordships of Albarracín, Molina de Aragón and Comunidad de Daroca.
