A touristic city that used to be for fisherman
Originally only for fisherman, Portimão has become one of the most touristic cities of the Algarve with its famous beach Rocha. The architectural profile of its center is marked by the architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, since the medieval Portimão just retained some stretches of wall, hidden between the houses. The main pedestrian shopping streets and city depart from Republic Square (are the Rua do Comercio, Sao Joao de Deus, Vasco de Gama and Diogo Tomé), which also is one of the most important religious structures in Portimão: The College of the Jesuits. Not far away are the Mother Church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción and Plaza December 1.
