Santa Maria Di Castello

Excellent

Entering this convent church is like entering the heart of the city and not just because it is in the oldest part but also because it connects the Maritime Republic of Genoa. It was built between the IX and X centuries an the top of the hill Sarzano, a natural lookout over the harbor. We can see the economic power of Genoa and the patronage of the most influential families in various parts of this religious complex. Although perhaps the fresco of the Annunciation is the best known, the entire complex is a small museum. 10 centuries later (in the 19th century), after Cavour-Ratazzi law (1855) suppressed religious orders, the convents were converted into apartments.
