1 review of St. John the Baptist Fort

Seventeenth century castle

The Fort of San Juan Bautista (Forte de São João Baptista) is also known as the Castle of San Juan Bautista or simply as Fort Esposende. It's in Marinhas neighborhood, at the end of the promenade along the Cávado river estuary and is a Property of Public Interest. It was built in the late seventeenth century, during the reign of Peter II, to protect the Cávado river mouth. It has a 5-pointed star shape with a bastion at each vertex and hexagonal booths. Next to the fort is the metal Esposende lighthouse, built in 1866.
