As sacred as Benares
It is a city almost as sacred as Benares, but not quite so touristy. About 50kms north of Agra in Uttar Pradesh, it's bathed by the river Yamuna. Krishna was born in this city about 3000 years ago. Mathura was once anchored. The city frequently receives pilgrims seeking enlightenment, who form part of the landscape along with cows and monkeys.
