60 reviews of Koutoubia Mosque

The Koutoubia

It was the minaret of this mosque which we used to guide us through Marrakesh, at least when we were in the Medina. It is the most important mosque, the inspiration to build the Giralda, and non-Muslims can not enter. However, they can admire the outside beauty of this XII century Almohad construction. Their gardens can also be accessed without any problems. The Koutoubia is next to Mohamed V Avenue which takes you toward the new city (Gueliz) and also the area known as modern Hivernage. Besides these things, it is practically next door to the famous Djemaa el Fna market and the souks.

A guiding beacon in the Media

Excellent

The Koutoubia is a magnificent 12th century Almohad mosque which is a global reference in architecture. It's also closed to non-Muslims so those of us ve aren't Muslim can only admire it from the outside. You'll notice that you can see it from most anywhere in the Medina and that it makes an excellent landmark to find your way to Jemaa El Fnaa (if you're in Marrakech for only a few days, your general rule of thumb for finding anything is "towards the square" or "away from the square").

The gardens around the Koutoubia are free to visit and let you admire the details of the famous minaret up close.

It's not something that you'll spend hours visiting, but it's a must if you're in Marrakech. For me, though, seeing rising up in the distance from all over the city served as a constant reminder of where I was. And seeing it lit up at night while hearing the thundering drums of the Gnaoua musicians in Djemaa El Fna reminded me just how unique and exciting of a city Marrakech is. You have to go!

The Koutubia, whose name means the mosque of the booksellers, is the largest mosque in Morocco ms. His impressive minaret looks like the Giralda in Seville, as the Andalusians were inspired her to build his tower. Is on par with the Jemaa El Fna, and the imam calling to pray and punctuates the life of the population of the medina of Marrakech calls the faithful from its tip. Five times a day, life for the city, and they all go to pray. Those who can not meet this obligation, because of travel or because they have to work, have to make up the prayers at another time of day. There is always a lot of activity around the mosque. The ms sorprendientes are water vendors with a particular red suit, offering you a glass of water served as a leather bag filled with water that load on his back. Is surrounded by gardens where people come for a walk at night, sit on a bench and eat sweets and dried fruit, now the sexes are mixed in youth groups but seniors remain between same gender, fewer couples married.

The minaret of the Koutoubia (or booksellers) is the most famous of Marrakech and one of the largest. It is located in the plaza of the same name, halfway between the medina and the new city, Gueliz. It's a shame, but the minaret of the Koutoubia can not visit, like all mosques, where tourists have banned the entry. If you are a man and you have much interest in entering a mosque can you make it making you a Moroccan friend to take you with him at the time of prayer, but you have to meet all requirements (descalzarte, meet ablutions ... and have the blessing of the faithful and the magnet), in the case of women is even more complicated ... because besides they can not access the main area of the mosques, where men pray. The Koutoubia XII century and was a model for the Giralda in Seville. It was built to Abd el-Moumen where a palace Almoravid. The tower is 77 meters (just under the Giralda), and is topped by a skylight topped with four golden balls.

Convenient reference point that can move in a good part of Marrakech. But beware the minaret made school and others by the city, smaller of course, have its structure. We admire the decoration carved upper windows, all different depending on the 4 sides and the beautiful frieze of tiles. The monument was completed in the reign of Yacoub el Mansour (1184-1199): respect for his age and his youthful air! As for the golden balls that overcome the tower, a legend that would have melted the gold jewelry of a woman Yacoub ....

Mirala bien, no te recuerda a algo...

Mirala bien, no te recuerda a algo conocido?.
Watch her well, something reminds you not known?. This impressive minaret that is part of the Koutoubia Mosque, is the tallest monument in Marrakech and can be seen for miles. It served as a model for the minaret of the Giralda in Seville today, so it's so close. Hypnotic, proudly in the sky of this captivating city. When evening falls, her figure and even more impressive at night, illuminated, is indescribably beautiful. Of the top post of Marrakech, because from different angles you can get good snapshots.
