4 reviews of Theatre of Segesta

Segesta Festival

It is part of the North Acropolis and was built on the highest point of Mount Barbaro. It dominates a vast landscape from Mount Inici to the Gulf of Castellammare. This impressive theater was built between the third and second centuries BC by the Greeks and then later rebuilt by the Romans. It is made of limestone and marble. The semicircular cávea measures 63.60 meters at the diameter and has a capacity for 4,000 spectators divided into 20 rows of seats. The orchestra pit measures 18.40 meters. Behind this, a two-story, U-shaped Doric and Ionic style building stands decorated with reliefs. It is fairly well preserved and today is used for hosting a festival of classical performances during the summer.
