Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden

2 reviews of Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden

An interesting place

This is a bit different from the castle. There's a free bus that takes you every 15 minutes, but you can also walk, which takes around the same time (we had to do it a few times as the bus was very full), and gives you the chance to get a good look at the landscape, like Lake Maladrolaun and the Grotto, with its figure of the Virgin Mary. It is the only formal walled garden in Ireland that sits in a bog. There are flowers and plants from the Victorian era. The garden is vast, built at the same time as the castle, with lots of greenhouses, garden seating, and kitchens separated by a mountain stream.

There are hundreds of thousands of exotic and native trees. The water separates the gardens into two distinct areas, the vegetable garden and the flower garden. There was a small greenhouse with thousands of pots, and a tea house open from May to October, where you can enjoy the views of Diamond Hill and Connemara National Park.
