In the city center, which runs parallel to the bay, is where most historic attractions in Asuncion are located. The Government Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Ribera block, in which mansions abound, are mandatory things to see in Asuncion. Notable among all the houses are the Casa Viola, one of the few preserved colonial buildings and which now houses the Museum of the Paraguayan culture.
Beautiful views from the bay are some other Asuncion attractions. This side of the bay is studded with construction, much in contrast to the other side of the bay which is characterized by natural spaces and is home to more than 250 different species of waterfowl. Visiting the Central Railway Station "Carlos Antonio López", which now houses a train museum, is one of the funnest things to do in Assumption. The country was a pioneer in South America in regards to passenger trains and many curiosities are preserved in the museum. You can also take a ride on the steam train that's still running!
And finally, other stuff to do in Asunción includes visiting the Botanical Gardens, the peculiar Football Museum, or the Silvio Peterossi market, where you'll find all kinds of typical products and local crafts.
