Ape Cave Lava Tubes

Ape Cave Lava Tubes

1 review of Ape Cave Lava Tubes

One of the Area's Most Fun Hikes

Ape Cave isn't near much of anything, but the area provides great scenery and views of Mount Saint Helens. This alone is a real treat in the Pacific Northwest, but the hiking at the caves is icing on the cake.

The drive along Route 503 toward Ape Cave is gorgeous. Plan on allowing some extra time to stop along the way for hiking, swimming (weather permitting), or boating if you're able. At the very least, you'll want to take some photos.

The "cave" is actually a lava tune, and in fact, is one of the longest in the world that you can visit. It's over 13,000 feet long, and like a cave, it's cold, damp, and dark.
