7 reviews of Saint John's Co-Cathedral

Saint john´s co-cathedral

Never have I seen a facade as lavish! For my taste, is the best of all in Malta! A must! Admission cost us 5 euros and 3'50 for students (in April of 2012). It takes about 1 hour to visit and listen to the audio guide.

Glitz three hundred and sixty degrees

If you choose to see only one of hundreds of churches and chapels on the island of Malta, choose this and you will not be disappointed. Impossible not to be literally open-mouthed when you enter the Co-Cathedral of St. John in Valletta, so much gold and elegant decorations that cover every square inch of free dell'internok the sacred building. Style "super-baroque" able to be out of breath, especially since it is accompanied by a façade to an external decidedly sober. The church stands with its twin bell towers (an architectural element typical of 90% of its churches) in the center of Piazza Repubblica, one of the main city. It dates back to about 1570 and was built as a monastery church of the Knights of St. John. In 1816 he was elevated to the same status as the St. Paul's Cathedral in Mdina, the official seat of the Archbishop of Malta (hence the curious name of "co-cathedral"). The interior is organized in a rational manner, though complex, to give adequate space to the Knights of all nationalities: 12 niches line the aisles (six per side). On every wall, pillar and rib there are decorations of various kinds, but usually characterized by the Cross of Malta and the emblem of the Order. The floor has not been spared by the desire to fill every available space: marble plaques black, white, blue, red cover it completely. Do not miss! (The entrance is free of charge, and includes the audio guide also gives access to the museum of the cathedral).

Sfarzo a trecentosessanta gradi

The cathedral of st john co

There are many things to say about the Co-Cathedral of St. John! First, it is actually the first monastic church was erected in Valletta by the Knights of the Order of Malta. For a long time the seat of the bishopric was located in the city of Mdina, and so that's where that was located the Cathedral of Malta. In 1572, the convent church also had a cathedral, which is why it is now called the Co-Cathedral, Mdina since it obviously still exists! Co-Cathedral in Valletta is absolutely gorgeous, you are assured here to take full eyes! The richest knights were buried here under the stelae of the cathedral. The show is everywhere, on the walls with these amazing decorations, ceiling with magnificent paintings, and beneath your feet with these tombstones that are true works of art! The co-cathedral is composed of eight chapels, each corresponding to one of the oils languages spoken by the Knights of the Order of Malta (Auvergne, Provence, France, Castile, arragon, Italy, England and Germany). Do not miss the small room of the building, which exhibits the paintings of Caravaggio (who stayed in Malta and was a member of the Order). There is here the only canvas signed by the world's master!

Beautiful and impressive

The Co-Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Valletta is located in St. John Square, in the historic center, and was built between 1572 and 1577 under the direction of the architect Gerolamo Casser. The impact of vision immediately very strong: the facade of the church imposing but sober, and stands out among the other buildings with two large bell towers. The interior, for completely different: the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Baptist considered a masterpiece of the art Baroque, and along its three naves are funerary monuments in charge of the Knights of the Order and the languages they speak, stucco, frescoes and a beautiful marble floor that is worth stopping to observe for a few minutes, because formed by tombstones, always remember the Knights. a real riot of gold and marble that will amaze all visitors. His treasures, for, are the two works by Caravaggio here costudite, the San Girolamo this Company and the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, This latter is particularly important because the only work signed dallautore. For those who want to know something more about this beautiful church, you can rent audio guides in different languages or see the small bookshop the present.

Bella e imponente

St. john's co-cathedral

This pure and beautifully preserved treasure is in the historic center of Valletta, Malta. Samples possessing artistic and historical worth seeing slow, contemplative. Poer the same price (6 euros) have an audio input and pretty good. In my opinion, the floor completely covered with knights tombstones, frescoes and Baroque coffered ceiling and walls and tombs and monuments of the Grand Masters of the Order of Malta, are the highlights of the visit.

Very interesting

Interesting visit with audio guide fairly well explained. You can admire Caravaggio inside, but already one is worth the visit.
