Facing the City Council building, in the pedestrianised Calle El Conde, is a monument to Bartholomew Columbus, brother of the famous admiral, and founder of the city of Santo Domingo (then Nueva Isabela) in 1498, on the east bank of the river Ozama. It was to be a strategic base for the colonisation of the Americas. In 1502, it was devastated by a hurricane, and the governor rebuilt it on the other side of the river - where it stands today - now Santo Domingo de Guzman.
