2 reviews of Caerphilly Castle

The largest medieval castle in Wales

An artificial lake keeps water pumped around the fortified castle of the town of Caerphilly in south-east Wales. Built between 1268 and 1271, it was extended in 1326. It is the largest medieval castle in Wales, as well as being one of the largest in Britain (second only to Windsor Castle) and Western Europe. This is the first concentric castle built in Britain, covering an area of 12 hectares, and has never been a royal residence. Climbing the narrow and slippery stone spiral staircase up to the top of the towers, you can admire the views of the surrounding valley. An interesting feature is the leaning tower, which has a list of 11 degrees due to an attack during the English Civil War, but has never fallen.
