10 reviews of Campidoglio

Capitoline Hill

The Piazza del Campidoglio is located on Capitoline Hill in downtown Rome just behind the monument to Vittorio Emmanuele. Michelangelo was originally commissioned with the design of the entire square, including the pavement, but the one we see today is just a replica; due to years of deterioration, the original is now located in the Capitoline Museums. A large equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius presides over the square and there's a column topped with the celebrated statue of the Capitoline Wolf.

You shouldn't miss the beautiful Cordonata, a sloping staircase also designed by Michelangelo and topped with statues of Castor and Pollux.

Amazing

Located just north of the Roman Forum, the Piazza del Campidoglio is one of the most beautiful squares in Rome, and that's quite a feat. Getting there is fairly simple: you can just walk from the Colosseum or catch a bus to Piazza Venezia then climb the stairs.

The square was designed by Michelangelo and it took over 100 years to build. The result, though, is amazing. It's a fantastic place and the great buildings don't clash at all.
