Historische Felsengänge (Underground Cellars)

2 reviews of Historische Felsengänge (Underground Cellars)

Once were air raid shelters

The soft sandstone of Castle Hill is riddled with caves and passageways carved into the rock. This underground labyrinth was dug, in some places up to four stories deep, over the centuries for two main reasons. First, it has been used since the 14th century as a place to store and ferment beer. Later, during World War II, many tunnels were dug as air raid shelters.
