2 reviews of Duomo of Erice (Cathedral)

Duomo of Erice

Excellent

It is known by many names: Il Duomo, Chiesa Matrice (main church) or Santa Maria Assunta. Erice Cathedral is a place definitely worth a visit. According to tradition, the church was erected in the time of Emperor Constantine in the fourth century AD. The temple we see today was built by Frederick III of Aragon in 1312, with material from the Temple of Venus Ericina. It was changed several times over the years. The cathedral is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. The austere facade features an arcade of pointed arches and is surmounted by a beautiful Gothic rose window. In 1853 the interior collapsed and had to be rebuilt after which it was inaugurated 10 years later.
