Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk

3 reviews of Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk

Modern Gothic Church

They say that Rotterdam only has three old buildings, and the Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk is one. It suffered serious damage during the bombing of the second World War, but it has been perfectly reconstructed. The architecture is Gothic and aside from religious acts, it also hosts concerts, parties, and cultural events.

The gothic church of San Lorenzo in Rotterdam

The Church of San Lorenzo is very close to the Markthal and the avant-garde Cube Houses. It was built in the fourteenth century in Gothic style for Catholic worship, but since the sixteenth century it was taken by Protestants and is the only medieval building that is preserved today in the city center. This Gothic church stands out as a faithful witness of history amid all the modern and innovative architecture of the center of Rotterdam. I liked its huge bronze doors that symbolize war and peace. Its interior decoration is quite austere where only its huge stained glass windows and the large central organ 23 meters high stand out. To enter you must pay € 2 and it is open from 10 am until 5 pm. Opposite it is the Erasmus Square in Rotterdam where they offer artistic music and dance shows where you can also take a break to continue with your visit to the city that, you would surely love!

In itself it is beautiful

Di per se è bellissima

Excellent
In itself it is beautiful. Unusual, as an Italian, you will find a local handicraft market right in front of a nave, a couple of artistic installations and the restaurant bar, but I appreciated the little canonical vision of the Dutch church.
