You never know what can happen on a journey ... in our case, we found ourselves with no money in a foreign country! Luckily, in Santiago you can spend a night in the "Hogar de Cristo", which is a homeless shelter. A night costs from 0 to 200 Chilean pesos (up to $0.15), and you have a shared room with the city's homeless. You eat and shower with them - a truly humbling experience. Don't fear discomfort or illness. A good choice in case of emergency.
