Two extinct volcanoes

The Kahuzi-Biega National Park is in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, 50km west of Bukavu, near the western shore of Lake Kivu and the Rwandan border. Created in 1970, in 1980 it was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. It has an area of ​​6,000 km². The park is covered with a vast expanse of primary rainforest and is dominated by two extinct volcanoes: the Kahuzi (3,308 m) and Biega (2,790 m). The Kahuzi is the highest peak of the region. Between 2,100 and 2,400 m high experiencing one of the last populations of mountain gorillas, Dian Fossey was here and she started studying before going to Rwanda.
