La Caleta Natural Pools

El Hierro is not characterized by big extensions of beach; its coast is very abrupt, this is why they have created a series of natural pools for swimming, such as the ones in La Caleta or in La Maceta.

The pools of La Maceta are a few kilometers away from the airport and the capital, Valverde. It is a natural area for swimming, where the water from the sea has “dammed up” in a sort of conditioned pool. Next to the pools there is an area for lying in the sun, and you can also swim in the sea if you go down the stairs (although the waves are quite big).

There are not many beaches in El Hierro, due to the orography; but this is compensated with natural pools, some of them excavated in the volcanic rock.

One of the most popular places is La Caleta, where you can choose from many of the various turquoise blue pools.
