Viewpoints in Las Casas
Viewpoint of the Beaches
The Mirador de las Playas is one of the best places to contemplate the bay area of the island. It offers a great panoramic view of the coast. From the viewpoint you can see the Roque de Bonanza in the area of Las Playas, with impressive stretches of black sand of volcanic origin in contact with the sea. It is easy to get there from the region of San Andrés, taking the HI-1 road southbound and taking the detour to Las Casas. About a kilometer before arriving to Las Casas there are a number of detours that take you places from where you can get a view areas such as Mocanal, Mirador de Isora and Mirador de Las Playas. It is, without a doubt, a great place to get some fresh air and enjoy wonderful views of El Hierro.
Hiking in La Dehesa
Harbors in La Restinga
La Restinga
La Restinga is a small fishing port located in the municipality of El Pinar del Hierro, south of the island of El Hierro. It is a special place where it is always summertime, where its kind people will welcome you and where you can dive in the best diving spots in Europe, a place that has proven that the creation of a marine reserve betters the natural surroundings while boosting the area’s economy. It has an exquisite promenade, perfectly integrated to the surroundings where the volcanic lava submerges in the sea, forming unique figures. Crystalline waters, with a great biodiversity, delight diving lovers. The practice of this sport can be practiced in a controlled way in different points of the marine reserve, accompanied by one of the port’s multiple diving centers. To sleep in La Restinga, the best option is to rent one of the many apartments available. But make sure that you book it before arriving in the island.
Ponds in Valverde
La Caleta Natural Pools
El Hierro is not characterized by big extensions of beach; its coast is very abrupt, this is why they have created a series of natural pools for swimming, such as the ones in La Caleta or in La Maceta. The pools of La Maceta are a few kilometers away from the airport and the capital, Valverde. It is a natural area for swimming, where the water from the sea has “dammed up” in a sort of conditioned pool. Next to the pools there is an area for lying in the sun, and you can also swim in the sea if you go down the stairs (although the waves are quite big). The entire “construction” is perfectly integrated with the natural surroundings.
Volcanoes in Frontera
Volcanoes of El Hierro
The island of El Hierro is the youngest of the archipelago and, as such, it is more likely to suffers seismic and volcanic phenomena, etc. The municipalities of Frontera and El Pinar are more prone to suffering this kind of phenomena. There are approximately 500 craters in the island, making it the one with more volcano density in the entire Canary Islands. Since it is the last island that emerged in the archipelago, it is still in a primary phase, so the risk of volcanism is greater. The places where you can observe volcanic cones are near the lighthouse of Punta Orchilla, in the municipality of El Pinar, or in Dehesa, municipality of Frontera. It is really a beautiful view, to be able to be in front of a volcanic cone. I recommend the visit If you are in the island of El Hierro.

Mar de Calmas
One of the things that caught my attention in El Hierro was Mar de Calmas, located in the southeastern coast of the island. It is very unusual to see from the top of the Julán a line that perfectly delimits this sea, as calm as a raft, while on the outside the sea is rough. The 750 hectares of this Mar de Calmas are a Marine Reserve. Its calm and crystalline waters make it the ideal place to dive and fish (in authorized areas). It seems that it is the only place in the world where you can see the mackerel shark less than 20 meters away. In the esplanade of the port of La Restringa there is a visitor center that offers information about the marine reserve.
