Matera is working hard to establish its artistic and cultural status. This is exemplified by it being awarded European capital of culture for 2019. MUSMA, a small contemporary sculpture museum, opened in 2006 and is housed in Palazzo Pomarici. Not unsurprisingly the majority the gallery space is in caves, but this provides and opportunity for visitors to explore both the art exhibits and the system of caves. The Palazzo was known locally as the 'palace of a hundred rooms' and as you climb the various staircases you may suspect you are caught in a painting of Escher. Open 10-2 and 4-8 daily.
