Ngayene Sabakh
Ngayene sabakh is one of the most remote places I have been a long time. It is located at the border between Senegal and Gambia, an hour and a half by Taxi from Brousse of Kaolack, and five or six hours from Dakar. these travel times, though, are assuming that everything has gone well, and that is not always the case. The bus in Senegal doesn't leave every hour, it leaves when the bus is full. You can spend hours waiting, with a driver who says "now out, do not walk away" every ten minutes. But time has a different value in Africa. Ngayene is a poor village, whose main interest is an archaeological site of monoliths, poorly known provenance, which is 6 miles from town.
The people are very simple, but very nice. There is no electricity in the village, and the health center is very small, with only a few cold medications. The latest innovation was that the nurse bought a bike to be able to travel around the towns in the event of an emergency or a woman in labor, rather than to go by donkey. Children learn French in school, but up to 6 years do not hear a word of French, speak Wolof, the main dialect of the country. But they are very used to try and communicate with other ethnic groups, who speak other languages, and have as a gift to understand you, whatever your language. The Muslim population is better educated and speak classical Arabic.
