Nosa Senhora do Sameiro

Touring Braga we had the opportunity to visit the shrine of Our Lady do Sameiro, which is on top of the mountains near Braga and near the sanctuary of Bom Jesus Natural Park. Building began in 1863 when they placed the first image of Our Lady of the Conception on top of the mountain. To access the basilica walk there's a spectacular staircase, lined with two high pillars, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the Sacred Heart. Up and down the stairs is "quite an effort of pilgrimage" for its length and height. The sanctuary also has vehicle access. At the beginning of the stairs is a sculpture of Pope John Paul II to commemorate his visit here.
