1 review of San Amaro Chapel (Capela de Santo Amaro)

San Amaro Chapel

On the outskirts of the historic center, in a secluded spot at the foot of the magnificent aqueduct, is San Amaro Chapel (classified as Property of Public Interest). It's on a promontory so you have to climb a grand staircase. It is believed that it was built by the Pinheiro de Barcelos family in the sixteenth or seventeenth century. It's rectangular with one nave, although its appearance is very austere and simple we couldn't see inside as it was closed. Outside, I noticed an addition at the back, made of masonry and covered with a small brick Byzantine-style dome.
