Last refuge of the Asiatic lion

This territory is the last refuge of the Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica)It's 59 kms away from Junagadh by the Visavadar road in the state of Gujarat, Kathiawar Peninsula. The reserve was created to protect lions and their habitat. It's 1,400 km2 of hilly and mountainous terrain, called Gir hills and is 30 km from the Arabian Sea coast. It's very important to note that the lions share the land with surprising naturalness with maaldharis (livestock). At newcomer is surprised to see how the herds of buffaloes and cows move along the roads of the reservation fearlessly continuing grazing and it is possible with the abundant variety of natural prey: foxes, wild boar, chinkara gazelles, chousinghas, the mutiaco or farmhand deer and the largest antelope of India, the nilgai. Leopards can also been seen here, especially in the higher areas, for the very reason that it's difficult to see them.
