St. John's Church
This church is in the parish of St. John, at the end of the road and just over a cliff. There is a viewpoint from which there are spectacular views of the eastern part of the island, the lush vegetation and the Caribbean. The church was originally constructed in the seventeenth century, but was rebuilt several times after a fire and a hurricane destroyed it. It has a large tower and stained glass windows in a Gothic style. The highlight of the interior is the carved cedar wood in the pulpit, the benches, and the spiral staircase which leads to the choir area. The huge organ is a real antique, beautifully preserved in Barbados.
On every church wall, plaques show the most illustrious and wealthy inhabitants of the island. The cemetery is located at the back of the church and has large tombs and mausoleums, including that of Ferdinando Paellologus, the last descendant of the Greek emperor, ve lived in Barbados for his final twenty years. It is a wonderful place to visit.
