St Mary's Old Church

Excellent

The creation of the Church of St. Mary in 1472 marked the introduction of the second official Diocese of the island. It was a symbol of the island's commercial growth. However, the original church was demolished and rebuilt in 1692 for the bishops of the Church of Scotland, which is the complex that stands today. The most attractive part of the church, after the nice walk up to it, is the cemetery, which houses a tomb dating from the XIV century belonging to a medieval knight who died in the area. You will also find the tomb of the lady, dating from the same time. What´s interesting is that nobody we asked knew the church we were asking for and it was definitely the official name we used, the one that is given in the most touristy áreas.
