Important

The visit to the ruins of Hamar Cathedral offers an absolutely unique cultural and architectural experience. It's a Catholic Cathedral dating from the 12th century located on the highest point of the city. It was an important landmark visible from a great distance on Lake Mjøsa. It was built with limestone extracted from the area. It has Romanesque architecture with later Gothic additions that began in 1152 and ended in 1200. It was very important because it functioned as the headquarters of the Norwegian national episcopate. Hamar stopped hosting the bishopric in 1536 when it was transferred to Oslo, at which time it lost its importance and began to deteriorate.
