La Bodeguilla de Basilio Restaurant
(38)
In the guest house where we stayed in Cuenca we asked the owner for suggestions of a "tapas and cañas" bar (tapas and beers) worth visiting. His suggestion was a success! He mentioned the Bodeguilla de Basilia and, even though it is a little bit far from the old part of town, it was worth the effort. The place is tiny, decorated with old household items and pictures of the village. In the back there is a small dining hall, but the real soul of the bar lies at the counter. It is quite difficult to get a place there, and the lucky ones who succeed smile in triumph and won't let it go easily. With every drink you order you get an "appetizer". We got a bowl of "cocido" soup that was really good. The second one was an enormous plate of "little delights". Since we had a privileged spot at the counter we decided to go for a second round, enjoying this time a cup of potatoes with meat and then fried baby squid ("chipirones"), delicious! We tried ordering a third round but they told us that the kitchen was about to close (it was 4 pm), so we left with a happy stomach and our thirst quenched to follow the cultural route through the lovely province of Cuenca.

A pedestrian street right next to the palace of the Province of Cuenca, with its typical tapas bars and rods. During summer days and especially on weekends, people fill the bars since it is one of the best areas for tapas hopping where you can run from the high prices in the historic center.
