It is an island where sea wolfs used to live; this is where the name comes from.
Island of Lobos (wolfs): time stops, the blue of the sea is special, the light floods it all. The sea surrounds it with a veil of foam. We were intrepid explorers for one day, curious naturalists that analyzed every corner.
In the west coast of the island of Fuerteaventura I discover the small locality of Betancuria which, presided by its church-cathedral, was the ancient capital of the island until 1834. Its name comes from the French founder Bethencourt, who turned it into the political, administrative and religious center of the island in the 15th century.
The church-cathedral of Santa María de Betancuria is its most important monument. The bell tower and the columns preserve some of the remains of the primitive construction using a Gothic-Norman style. The visit to the museums of sacred art and the archeological one are very interesting, both with historic collections of great value. The smallest municipality of the island, with just 800 inhabitants, will delight the traveler who discovers it.
