The most noticeable thing about the Isla de Sal is that which is lacking. On the island there is little: sea, wind and people living with scarce resources.
You realize that you actually do not need too much to live. Make no mistake!: We are urbanites, but sites like this help us to shake off our everyday lives and take different views about the way in which people live their lives.
Pedro lume, salt island. A harbour where fish are brought in every morning, Santa Maria, overlooking the capital. It is a wonderful place, great people, barnacles are a real treat at 15 €, 25 € for lobster... I highly recommend it!
Nowhere in Salt will you fail to see that life is simpler than we make it in the West. Four posts and a few planks turn a dock into a play área for children. The fish is brought in and Westerners take photos looking amazed at the life of simple people who enjoy the little or a lot they have, when they have it, always with a big white smile on their face. The weather is always mild, the sea placid and warm and the color of sky and water is sure to help ...
Although not on the mainland, this reminds us of those great films of hunters in Africa. It feels like a North American actor is behind the wheel of a jeep and soon a group of fleeing antelope will appear. But it is the desert (well, the whole island is a desert) that is a big NO NO in Espargos (the capital). The truth is I felt that I was a tiny creature and that the desert "gave me permission" to step on its soil ... The other picture is the fabric made of palm leaf that is used on roofs. You can tell it never rains!
Really nice sandy beach, just at the center of the city. The only thing I did not like was that every 2min somebody came and wanted to sell us something.
Though is was understandable since a lot of the locals depend on tourism.
