Last April 5th, I was on the hill in Nutivara, also known as "Pueblito Paisa", which was a unique experience because you can learn the Antioch history in all different fields, like gastronomy and architecture. This gives the sensation of going in time to the colonial era. Also, from here you get the best view of the city. You can also spot the city centre and the Holaya Herrera Airport. The weather is also wonderful, and if you want to bring your kite, you can fly it on the lookout.

Botero is not only the most famous artist from Colombia, but he is certainly a man of great generosity, as both Bogota and Medellin have museums that house some of his own work and work from his personal collection, donated by the artist himself to the museums. Specifically, in 2000, the Museum of Antioquia received a donation of 114 paintings (oils, watercolors and drawings) from him. 21 works by international artists from his personal collection and 23 sculptures make up the Plaza Botero. It is certainly worth visiting.

One of the most modern botanical gardens and one of the most beautiful I've seen, an oasis of calm amid the bustle of Medellin. What stands out is the butterfly garden, the orchid garden and primary jungle area, which takes you to the Amazon.

This is a place where you can spend a day with nature. Located in the hills of Medellin, it's reached by a cablecar open from Tuesday to Sunday and has 2 thematic areas, one managed by Familiar Comfama and the other by Comfenalco.

Medellin Metrocable

Sometimes I'm brash when I travel, but I admit now that no one listens to me. For starters, all the cities in Colombia are safe, but going into a low demographic neighbourhood looking like a tourist with a backpack and camera in hand, is not the most recommended. You never know what the hundreds of eyes that are looking at you are thinking. I guess the fact of it makes you more afraid than what you'll feel like when you're there. Medellin is in a valley and a large part of the city was built on the slopes of the mountains so the underground train doesn't reach everywhere. The solution to this problem is to go by cable car (metrocable). Right now, there are 2 lines of metrocable in operation, but it's expected that more are going to be built. The length of this line is just over 2 kilometres, saving you a vertical climb of 400 meters.

This is the best place in the world for relaxation and enjoying a completely natural environment with your partner, away from all the noise of a big city. It's a small island with all amenities. You can do as you please and never have anyone watching you. It's the place you've been dreaming of in the middle of a reservoir with spectacular scenery. The best things are its climate, its view, its location, its value, its food, its people. All the surroundings are spectacular and I hope you check it out.

You can also get to know a little of our culture by visiting museums and traveling by subway or metro. Medellín is a vibrant and cheerful place, you should see it for yourself.

Santa Elena

Santa Elena, is one of five districts of the city of Medellin and located in east of the city where it has an area of 70.4 square miles. It's about 2,600 meters above sea level so it has a cold climate and a wide biodiversity. It has a great history, because it contains large ancient trails, and is the place of origin of the Silleteros, who are a National Cultural Heritage. They are flower growers who have a long tradition in this country, and where every August 7 each year, they come to parade with saddles on their shoulders through the city, because they are the backbone of the Festival of Flowers. Also, Santa Elena is within the Regional Arvi Park nature reserve which covers a large area, comprised of other municipalities such as Envigado, Guarne, Marinilla, Bello and Copacabana. This park with its large biodiversity, has creeks that feed the city with water, ancestral paths, fences, and ruins, a large variety plants where they are several native tree species. To know the tradition and silleteros there are silleteras farms, which are the houses that the silleteros live in, where there are crops of flowers and vegetables.

A beautiful building in the heart of the city, overlooking the Plaza Botero. The architecture is reminiscent of a cathedral, sure to catch your eye. Most people think that this building is closed to the public, but in fact, there's a small open exhibition (when I was there, it was the work of Hannibal Gil). There's also a beautiful little courtyard, with a small fountain, and a restaurant with fairly reasonable prices.

Santa Fe de Antioquia was founded in 1541, before Medellin was founded. It used to be the political center of Antioch and one of the most important cities in Colombia. It's one of the country's best preserved colonial cities and includes a Cathedral, the Hermitage, the Black house and the city museum. Within walking distance there is a wooden bridge that has been declared a National Heritage Site.

Pablo Escobar Gaviria Museum

This is where Pablo Escobar spent the last few weeks of his life, before killing himself on a rooftop in Medellin, Colombia. We were shown around by a wonderful man, with a calm demeanor, and an amazingly detailed knowledge about the Medellin cartel. He told us about Don Roberto Escobar Gaviria, who was in a maximum security jail but nevertheless, sent out a letter bomb on 18 December, 1993 ... what kind of maximum security are we talking about?! All of our questions were answered, and at the end we could buy some photos. We had a typical Colombian coffee, and learned a lot about this dark period of the country's history, and why it's essential that we should not repeat it.
