Hiking in Chiantla
The Blue Unicorn Ranch
The city of Huehuetenango, has nothing exceptional, outside of being surrounded by mountains. But I had been told of a place in the mountains, run by a French woman and her husband in Guatemala, The Blue Unicorn. The name attracted me, and with the excuse of the visit of a friend we went with him to discover the place ... I had never ridden a horse in my life! It was an amazing adventure. You contact the owners to arrange a meeting in another village like Huehue or higher on the mountain where they shall find. Hence one hour pick-up to the ranch, one house in the middle of a vast desert plateau almost (in the dry season at least). The cold can be very strong, but never snow. The house is heated by the fire and give you a hot water bottle to bed not feeling so fresh! There are few rooms, one with double bed, another with twin beds and a separate chalets. There is room for up to 15 people, which is quite familiar environment. The price of your stay includes meals, lovingly prepared by the owner, and an hour on horseback. Do not hesitate to write an email to find out more about prices and availability. And above all, do not worry, even if you have never gone to one of these animals, explanations and care are so good you just want to keep riding through the hills!
