It was voted the best hostel in Europe in 2005 and I´m not surprised. Friendly Frank´s Backpackers Hostel is run by a super-excellent and attentive staff. The owner is Australian. The hostel is located in a riverside building with great views. There are two or three floors with many rooms that all have lockers for safeguarding your things. In the evenings they host parties and also do a dinner one night a week. The staff also provides free city tours that leave in the morning. There are also tourist routes at bars. For example, for every 5 guests, you get one drink free. There are common areas with sofas, a bar, a jukebox and a happy hour. If you go to RIGA, do not hesitate to go to Franks Backpackers Hostel! Beds start at 9 euros.
This small but fun hostel is located in the old town of Riga. Upon arrival, the owner, who is also the bartender, treated us to a pitcher of beer. Rooms costs about 8€ / person, and the bar and reception area are open until the wee hours, if they even close at all. To tell the truth, they know how to put on a pretty good party! They serve beer non-stop and only charge you for about half of it. You enter the rooms by way of a false door in a library wall, which the barman opens for you. The rooms are adequate and have private bathrooms. All in all a good, fun hostel.
A modern three-star 200-room hotel, a bit impersonal (a clone of so many other hotels...) and very simple (a bar with some hangers embedded in a wall niche instead of a closet) but comfortable, with a more than decent bathroom, flat screen TV and minibar. The only personal decoration is inspired by Albert Einstein; in both the rooms and common areas there are phrases, formulas and pictures of the genius scientist. It's all very clean, and the staff are friendly.
It has two additional attractions: a restaurant on the ground floor with a cheap lunch menu where the breakfast buffet is served, and a bar-lounge with terrace with a 360-degree view of Riga. It's in the new area, close to the city's modernist buildings, with cafes, bars, and restaurants nearby. It is also very near the Church of St. Gertrude, that fans of the fictional Swedish police hero, Kurt Wallander, will know from the novel "The Dogs of Riga". As the city is relatively small, from the hotel you can walk around, but if it rains, there's a tram stop nearby. I recommend it.
We chose to stay here for four days, and it was really one of the best places we could have opted for in Riga. Centrally located, just 10 minutes walk from the bus station and 15 from the train station. The hostel has several floors, and we were in a room for 3, with a shared bathroom. The breakfast was great, with different types of bread, cereals, juices, coffees, jams, cheeses ... and it's served until 12! They have two computers with internet all the time, and a small library with maps and other information about Riga and the surrounding area. I don't remember the price exactly, but I know it was pretty cheap (we went in summer 2010). The staff helped us a lot sorting out train schedules to Jurmala, buses / trains to Cesis and Sigulda, recommended places to drink, eat ... etc. They include towels, by the way!
