    Where to stay in Stockholm

    Youth Hostels in Stockholm
    STF Långholmen Hostel
The Langholmen hotel used to be the largest prison in the country, but today the old cells have been renovated with Swedish minimalist modern design, and all the comforts a guest could want. The central courtyard where prisoners once walked has been covered with glass, letting in light but protecting against the cold. The hotel became operational 15 years after the prison closed. All rooms have a private bathroom and TV, and the cafe offers a simple menu at decent prices. Prices may seem expensive at first glance, but for Stockholm, it's really not bad. A single room is between 100 and 150 euros, a double between 140 and 180, depending on whether you're staying on a weekday or at the weekend. In summer there are special prices, and a part of the complex is dedicated as a youth hostel, so it's cheaper, but you'll share your "cell" with more people. There's free internet, breakfast is included, and it's in the middle of a park. The location is central enough to explore the island on foot, by bike or bus, and boat.

Radisson Blu Strand Hotel, Stockholm hotel
The Radisson SAS Hotel in Stockholm is an excellent hotel in the middle of the beautiful capital of Sweden. It opened in 1912 right next to where the Olympic Games were played. Attached to one of the many channels in the geographic center of the city, it offers luxurious facilities. It has 152 rooms, plus suites. The suites have different names referring to historical figures. They´re all different and have different views and decorations. The great view of the small cove and boats is an additional detail. Within walking distance you have several places for recreation or entertainment - the Theatre, the Royal Castle and its museum, the Museum of Modern Art (Moderna Museet), and numerous renowned restaurants like Källaren. Gamla Stan (The Old Town) and the exclusive shops of Östermalm design neighborhood are also just a few blocks away. The connections are perfect from the hotel. The subway is a few steps away and there is also a tram and bus in front as well as the ferries that go from one island to another. To get there by subway, get off at the Kungsträdgården station on the blue line. Surely those guets staying in this magnificent hotel won´t mind getting there by taxi either.

    Scandic Klara hotel
This is a 5-star deluxe hotel located in the center of Stockholm. It acts as a temporary residence for most international stars visiting the city. It is the only hotel in the country belonging to the exclusive chain "The Leading Hotels of the World". The hotel was founded in 1874 by Frenchman Régis Cadier, who could not have chosen a better location for an establishment of such characteristics. The original building was enlarged and today it is attached to the "Bolinderska" palace, which originally was a very luxurious private residence. It hosts 376 rooms, 42 of which are suites, 24 are local conference and party rooms, a cocktail bar, two restaurants and lounge, and a Spa. To get an idea of what exorbitant prices and the quality of service that you get, the price of the most expensive suite, called "The Princess Lilian Suite", is 55.000kr/night, so € 5,500 for one night. However, this includes the enjoyment of the 330 square meters of the room as well as a private personnel service.

    Youth Hostels in Stockholm
    STF af Chapman
This is a real landmark hotel in the city of Stockholm. You have the chance to sleep on a boat in the centre of the city. There are cabins for up to 6 or 8 people, and are ideal for group travel. An affordable price for a unique experience. Don't expect luxury: you'll have to make the bed yourself, and the toilet is shared. But the boat has been renovated, and standards are good.

    Hotel Riddargatan
A hotel located in central Stockholm in an older, quieter area. It is brand new, very modern, and full of color (the bar area at night has a system of lights that change color which gives a very peaceful vibe). And most importantly, there is free internet available. The rooms are very welcoming, small but really well cared for: good TV, a cozy bathroom and a complete double bed.

    Västberga Hotel
This hotel is located just outside the city of Stockholm. It is important to know, first of all, that it's better stay here if you're touring by rental car or if you don't mind being away from the center or taking public transit. This is one of the best options, as it is cheap, and offers quality services without any noise or bustle of the city. You have the disadvantage of not being in the heart of the city, but if only used for sleeping, it is perfect. There are several types of rooms, private or shared. The latter is cheaper, but with a shared bathroom as well. There are bathrooms and kitchens in the private room for 2 to 5 people. One of four, for example, costs about 120 euros (30 per person). The facility is clean with a cafe, a small terrace and parking. Facilities offered are pretty much the necessities, but there was nothing I missed. It has a TV, large closets, a dining table, telephone, radio, alarm clock. It's non-smoking and the staff gets quite angry if you do, but this is normal for the whole country. It's not a bad choice, but you should always keep in mind that it is far from the center.

    Quality Nacka Hotel
In theory this hotel was renovated in 2000. We spent the 9th and 10th of August in 2006 here. The price was 239,54 euros with breakfast included for the three and was reserved in Quehoteles.com three months in advance. It is located a little outside of the city, difficult to arrive to even with a GPS like in our case, the truth is that later we saw it was well communicated with the center with the buses 401 and 403 that are punctually passing every half hour. The reception was good, service was good, a perfect breakfast but the room was the most tacky in the world. Good thing that we weren´t like other guests of these luxury hotels, only having clean sheets a good bed and a shower.

    Rest and Fly hotel
I doubt I will ever stay in a hotel with a smaller room than that of the Rest and Fly, and yet I was not disappointed. This hotel, where you can book rooms by the hour, is located in the same terminal of Stockholm's Arlanda Airport. That was certainly the reason to reserve it, as my flight that arrived in Stockholm was almost at midnight and I had to catch another flight at 10 in the morning. We reserved one of the largest rooms, which was still small, and was basically filled with the space of the beds and a Spartan piece of furniture. The room was equipped with strange Swiss hange. Of course there were no windows or bathroom in the rooms, but I have to say that the showers were very clean. The strong point of this hotel is the location, as it is ideal for people who are in transit or have to spend the night at the airport. If we start well, better than nothing right?

    Nordic C Hotel
The Nordic Sea Hotel has a great location for anyone who wants to visit Stockholm. It is located right next to Central Station, so it is very useful for people coming from the Arlanda Airport. The atmosphere in the hall was a bit surprising. Then we discovered that all these people were standing in line to enter the icebar found inside the hotel. It was a shame, because when we wanted to go it was already too late and we left only wishing we could have had a drink there. The value of the Nordic Sea Hotel is quite high, because despite being a four star hotel, located in a good area, is was very cheap. The room we chose was not much, but it was equipped with a private bathroom, Internet access and two comfortable beds. Perhaps in other circumstances we would have been more exigent or demanding, but coming to sleep in the middle of nothing, the Nordic Sea Hotel wasn´t a bad place to rest in Stockholm.

    Sheraton Stockholm Hotel
This hotel is located next to one of the bridges crossing the historic district of Gambla Stan and a 5 minute walk from the central train station. The staff is the best around. They are very friendly and help you in any way they can. Moreover, there is a Spaniard from Malaga who works in reception so there is no language problem. The rooms are huge, modern, and everything is very clean. The rooms offer spectacular views of Lake Mälaren. They also have a coffee machine with various types of coffee and tea that you can enjoy at any time without any extra cost. The only problem as always is that the WiFi and breakfast cost extra and are not cheap. Undoubtedly it is very well located and merits a return visit.

    Clarion Hotel Stockholm
Stockholm, as you know, is the world capital of designs, and you can see it here - the details in all the rooms, in the restaurants, in the shops, everywhere you go, is breathtaking. The Clarion Hotel is not immune to this trend: in the rooms, in the pool, the spa, the terrace bar, you can see truly beautiful details. There are unique pieces by contemporary artists, some of which are for sale in the shop next to the reception. The rooms are large, clean and impeccably designed, offering stunning views over southern Stockholm. Behind the building is the former working class district of Sodermalm, now the most popular area of the city for shopping, nightlife and alternative culture. The hotel is located near the metro station Skanstull. The average price for a double room is about 1300 SEK (about 140 Euros), quite expensive, but worth it for a fabulous night.

    First Hotel Norrtull
During my stay in Stockholm I stayed at this very welcoming 3-star hotel. It's not too far from the city centre, easily reached by the number 65 bus that goes from the central station. The rooms are basic but cozy, the only downside was the lack of a wardrobe. I opted for bed and breakfast, and they served a typically Swedish continental breakfast with cinnamon cookies, pies and jams of all kinds, salami, sausages, eggs, and vegetables. There's a spacious lobby with sofas and chairs, and a PC with internet connection. The red brick building is also home to the Museum of Wines and Spirits.

There's an iPad in the room, a living room with the latest trendy magazines, a tripod for cameras, cables, and plugs of all kinds, a flat screen TV with internet, and very comfortable and chic decor besides! It's a 3 minute walk from the Arland terminal, with an express train to the airport.
