Bernini´s baldachin

The canopy is a type of shrine that has 4 columns supporting a dome designed to protect the altar. The most famous of all is the canopy of the Cathedral of St. Peter's Basilica, ordered to be constructed by Pope Urban VIII. It was constructed of bronze and has a height of 26 meters. This canopy is the most important piece in the basilica and lies over the tomb of St. Peter and lies just below the dome of Michelangelo.

Baldalquino san pedro

The St. Peter Baldacchino, Bernini commissioned in 1624, represents this concept of papal exaltation. This was done by Pietro Bernini with his father as chief mate and with the collaboration of Borromini from 1629 and be complete in 1633. The canopy is made entirely in gilded bronze, combining sculptural and architectural elements. This canopy, within the conception of San Pedro as miguelangelina templum covers the tomb of the apostle. This is a structure midway between architecture and sculpture, using twisted columns for the first time since antiquity, and trying to create a more consistent the viewer. This serves as an intermediary between the colossal scale of the basilica and the human viewer, antropizando in space. The using order is somewhat arbitrary salomónico using a canon in columns similar to a given Corinthian entablature on them, these being joined by textile decoration imitating valances. The whole is crowned by four struts, made by Pietro and Borromini, which we appreciate a certain influence. The columns are decorated with vine leaves vine refer to the eucharist, in which bees suck, in allusion to the arms of the Barberini. This shield is also found in the reliefs of the podiums.

The canopy of bernini, which dominate...

The canopy of Bernini, which dominates the center of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, is one of the main masterpieces of the Italian Baroque. The Solomonic columns decorated more than abundance were made using bronze elements of the Pantheon Agripine. It was a perfectly normal practice at the time in Rome. We took elements of an old work, deemed too old or too bulky for reuse in a new work of Renaissance style. This was partly due to the fact that raw materials were scarce and artists to continue to live reasonably should therefore be penny wise and pound foolish and take one to recreate another. This poster is probably the main symbol of wealth and splendor of the Vatican Basilica. At the time, his achievement was vastly acclaimed. With the arrival of the neoclassical period, he was also the scapegoat, the symbol of excess and disorderly profusion of Baroque artists. This is a work that leaves no one indifferent.

The canopy of Bernini, which is located in the center of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, is one of the most representative works of the Baroque. The columns, richly decorated, were fabricated using the bronze from the Pantheon of Agrippa. To "borrow" elements (such as marble, metals, precious stones) from other works of art was a common practice in Rome. This is perhaps the greatest symbol of wealth and grandeur that the Basilica of the Vatican owns. With the advent of Neoclassicism, was considered the symbol of the "disorder and excesses" that characterized the artists of the Baroque.
