Love at first sight

I have to admit that my relationship with the Guggenheim was love at first sight. When I saw it on TV I thought it was too modern, too unreal, too…I always found something wrong with it, but now I can only say that it is an authentic architectural marvel that has adapted to the city of Bilbao in a harmonious and perfect way.

If you are lucky enough to visit it on a day when the sun and clouds constantly change the color of the scales, you can feel really privileged. And, of course, don’t forget to see the beautiful puppy guarding the entrance. You couldn’t ask for more.

Bilbao definitely deserves a visit, and not only because of this impressive museum.

Nocturne for the guggenheim museum

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (in Spanish, Museo Guggenheim Bilbao; in Euskera, Guggenheim Bilbao Museoa) is a contemporary art museum designed by Canadian architect Frank O Gehry.
It is located in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. It is one of the five museums of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. It was inaugurated the 18th of October of 1997 by the King of Spain Juan Carlos I.

The negotiations for the construction of the museum between the public authorities of the autonomous community of the Basque Country and the executives of the Guggenheim Foundation started on February 1991. The agreement was signed at the end of that same year, and the architect and location for the building were selected in 1992.

Ever since it was opened in 1997, the museum has received an average of one million annual visitors thanks to its curvilinear and twisted shapes, covered with limestone, crystal curtains and titanium sheets. It has a surface of 24,000 square meters, 11,000 of them are reserved for exhibits, distributed in 19 galleries.

It is located on the bank of the ria of Bilbao, an area called Abandoibarra, next to the bridge Príncipes de España (La Salve Bridge) that is surrounded by a hollow tower. The building received many favorable critiques, like the one made by the American architect Philip Johnson, who described it as “the greatest building of our times”. Since 2007, it is one of the 12 Treasures of Spain.

By night or day

It is a magnificent building that plays, night and day, with the light that surrounds it, highlighting the organized chaos of peculiar volumes and curves.

I recommend the view from the opposite side of the ria. It is actually better if the day is cloudy, since it highlights it even more. By night, if you are lucky that the ria is calm, the array of reflections is impressive.

The building is barely illuminated by night, but it doesn’t need it since it reflects the light around it, and it is enough to highlight the landscape. If you go by car, there is a public parking lot nearby, a few meters from the mall.

The building is magnificent

Since then, the Guggenheim is essential visit for anyone going to Bilbao. We have entered a couple of times and really, as a museum / exhibitions not that I like it too, but the building is magnificent and a great work of architecture unmatched. Since the exterior is stunning, both for its location next to the river and the bridge La Salve, for curvilinear forms (no a single flat surface throughout its structure) that mimic the shape of a boat (or a flower if viewed from above). The walls are made of large titanium panels that simulate fish scales and on sunny days, giving a spectacular shine. As most know, was designed by architect Frank Gehry and opened in 1997. The interior is equally majestic. The great feeling of space you have to enter the hall, together with the great height of the ceiling and the walls are slanted, even tide. This unique architectural space is a contemporary art museum. The exhibitions, so depending on what it is, you might like more or less. But just for the office building worth looking into. Probably the most famous dog in the world, and certainly the most photographed. Puppy, the mascot of the Guggenheim Bilbao, is a huge and peculiar "terrier" which stands at the gates of the iconic museum as if it were a guardian. The author of this particular piece of steel covered with flowering plants is Jeff Koons. "Mom", strange name for this large bronze sculpture, stainless steel and marble representing a huge chandelier ten meters high. Passersby can pass under its giant arachnid body, I find it creepy and gives me some creepy the bug in question ... Creation is the work of artist Louise Bourgeois. It is one of the contemporary art sculptures that are part of the permanent collection of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, although it is installed in the rear of the building, under the Salve bridge.

The guggenheim museum is noticeable f...

The Guggenheim Museum is noticeable from afar! When I arrived in Bilbao, this is the first thing I saw ... And the first reaction is a big "wow! ...". I am speechless at the immensity of the building, whose area is as high as 24 000 m2, 11000m2 dedicated to exhibitions. The central atrium is considered the focal point of the museum, it measures about 50 meters high. True example of avant-garde architecture of the twentieth century, the museum is the brainchild of architect Frank O. Gehry. The materials used are multiple: Stone, glass and titanium. I found the curves of the extraordinary building, they were all designed by computer. It is a true architectural and mathematical challenge, a work of art in itself. I recommend watching the museum up from the bridge, located next door. We then have a good overview, interesting to realize the whole building ... Everything is oversized, it feels immersed in a futuristic world!

The guggenheim museum bilbao is one o...

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is one of four museums that make up the Solomon R. foundation Guggenheim. The museum is best known and recognized for its strange architecture, very contemporary, composed primarily of metal plates where the sun is shining, forming a structure for the less surprising that we owe to Frank Gehry. The building, to restore some momentum to the Basque town filled his role well, with more than one million visitors come each year to see the changing exhibitions. The foundation receives between 4 ET6 exhibitions per year, all styles and all eras. And outside the museum is of course no exception. Puppy, the big flowery dog, sitting in front of the building seems to be the keeper of the museum, a giant spider haunts the back, and many fountains have been installed around the museum, to the delight of children. If the museum was not the purpose of your trip to Bilbao, not miss under any circumstances!

The art in the city, for the city, the city

It is absolutely true that it is nice just outside and inside the collections are not worth the ticket, as I read in some comments on the internet. The Guggenheim Bilbao deserves both inside and out, and a visit with the audio guide helps you to understand why this building is so special, of course, is futuristic and timeless, but it is a temple of art where only fit few believers. It 's like the Bilbao had written in his destiny, because if you think that the museum has been there for 15 years you wonder just how it was possible did not exist before, so well harmonizes with the rest of the views. It would appear to have built a city around to make him feel less alone, and the fact that you can view it from any angle (from a bridge, a bench, on a hill, the ring road from the center) will have a well meaning. It is worth and how, and makes you realize that sometimes men can make business truly extraordinary.

Beautiful

On my visit in Holy Week 2010 at the Bilbao Guggenheim could not miss. Although it was only the foreign visit and worth its peculiar design using curved and twisted than the distance suggested form of a ship, all covered by limestone in some of its areas, high glass walls and slabs other titanium covering most, playing a lot with the lighting of the day to give a special touch (shame that when I was cloudy). Outside you can find some sculptures as the huge metal chandelier that very impressive in person, not forgetting the flowery sculpture Puppy, that it is impossible not to photograph, or sculpture of metal spheres.

Precioso

Play of light and the sun shines

A wonderful architectural level, making the entire structure a play of light and the sun shines you can be doing photos all afternoon and will no equal. Nearby there is a terrace where you usually put good music relaxing and contemplating to sunset. Unforgettable, a part of making a cultural visit to the exhibition on duty inside, take a few rich "Marianitos" or fresh ruedita this season.

The spanish guggenheim

Voyagae during my study in Spain, we stopped in the city of Bilbao in northern countries. We found the city as well as the emblem flagship Bilbao, the Guggenheim Museum! Impressive and futuristic in its structure, the museum necessarily appeal to modern and contemporary art lovers! Its permanent collection is just delicious and diverse as his temporary collections are original but equally sublime. You can admire the works of Eduardo Chillida, Yves Klein, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Clyfford Still, Antoni Tàpies and Andy Warhol, among others. The interior of the building is original and the museum is very spacious. I loved. The entrance fee is not so excessive, so go ahead!

Breathtakingly

Culture or art sometimes not only found inside buildings or museums, but these themselves are mostly art, this is what happens to the Guggenheim. I'm not avalorar its content, but the continent is expressive enough to do not need many words. I have the good fortune to live in Bizkaia and so often I can go through the building designed by Frank Gehry, and every time I go I'm looking so great artwork breathtaking. As I write little person I think the images speak better than me so here are a few so you can see just a little of this great work to enjoy all / as

A napkin sketches

My mother had a fish with golden scales articulated. It was a pendant that lost do not know where but I have not seen done. Today I am in front of the Guggenheim and went back to remember that little fish, cut into pieces but fit so perfectly. They say in the museum that the author, Frank Gehry, the project presented no competition, except with a napkin sketches he had painted on the hotel a few hours before. Truth or legend, the fact is that the museum is a success, an example of where the cities should be addressed. There is a picture that comes out ugly. The brightness of titanium, the transparency of glass, the blue of the river ... The building itself is worth a visit to Bilbao.

The guts of the guggenheim

The Guggenheim Museum has become with its curvaceous titanium banner Bilbao, in addition to housing a large collection of contemporary art. Now with this new initiative of the museum is organizing a tour each week in multiple languages (English Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Spanish in French), presenting not only the collection, but how it works inside the museum itself. From the loading dock to distribution by interior corridors, banquet catering, warehouse work, visiting the kitchens, engine room under the river and even the roof of the museum! This dynamic loaded and explaining the operation of the museum. The initiative loved.

The harmony of shapes

The best work of art that can be seen at the Guggenheim in Bilbao is definitely the museum itself! An impressive, made of intersecting planes, curves, different materials, elaborate stained glass, fountains and water jets .. in addition to the various sculptures on display outside. I have unfortunately had to postpone his visit to the next outing .. the outside but I was certainly more than rewarded!
