1 review of Darjiu Church

UNESCO world heritage site

Darjiu Church has been a UNESCO World Heritage since 1997. Initially built in a Roman style, the church was converted into a Gothic basilica in the 15th century. The entrance and the vestibule of the nave are from the 16th century. The altar decorations represent a pelican with its young, and on the other side, the moon, the sun, and masks. The stronghold around the church was built over 5m high, with towers on each corner. They served to protect the inhabitants of Darjiu during invasions. You can still find the modules that each family had where they could leave their gold and grain, to look after in case there was a war.
