Muhlendamm

This area along the river Spree is now a nice place to go and eat by the water. The banks are pedestrianized. Mühlendamm was formerly the largest city between Berlin and Coln. The two cities were founded on a crossroads on the river Spree. Soon after, a dam allowed easy access to cross the river. Mills were built on the water. After a fire in 1838, they rebuilt the mills in a Norman style, despite the recommendations of the council. These structures were destroyed in the nineteenth century to make room for the great Ephraim palace and Molkenmarkt houses. The cities were then one urban cluster.
