Philipsburg

La isla de St. Maarten está dividida en dos, una parte es francesa y otra holandesa. Philipsburg es la capital de la parte holandesa y se encuentra situada al sur de la isla, entre las bahías de Great Bay (bañada por el mar Caribe, donde hay una extensa Playa recorrida por un animado Malecó) y Salt Pond (una laguna interior de agua salada). La estructura de la ciudad es una cuadrícula, con largas calles paralelas a la bahía, y más cortas en perpendicular (éstas curiosamente tienen nombres en alemán). La calle principal es [poi=111494]Front Street[/poi], donde hay multitud de tiendas (libres de impuestos), el museo histórico de la ciudad y la [poi=111516]Iglesia católica de San Martín de Tours[/poi]. El lugar más céntrico es [poi=111499]Wathey Square[/poi], donde se halla el Palacio de Justicia ([poi=111492]Court House[/poi]). En su parte posterior está Back Street, donde se encuentra el [poi=111535]Tourist Market[/poi] (un mercadillo donde comprar artesanías), y frente a él la [poi=111534]Iglesia Baptista del Nuevo Testamento[/poi]. La ciudad es un paraíso para las compras, ya que [b]todo está libre de impuestos[/b], así que éste es el principal atractivo para el turismo. La estratégica situación de St. Maarten en el Caribe hace que sea un centro comercial internacional de primer orden, por lo que su puerto es de vital importancia en su economía. Wathey Pier[/poi] cuenta con puerto de mercancías y una moderna terminal de cruceros (la [poi=111529]John Craane Cruise Terminal[/poi]), pues recibe anualmente 1,5 millones de turistas. Ésta cuenta con el centro comercial libre de impuestos [poi=111531]Harbour Point Village[/poi] y un servicio de [poi=111517]Water Taxi[/poi] que comunica la terminal con el centro de la ciudad, en el embarcadero [poi=111502]Captain Hodge Wharf[/poi].

The structure of the city is a grid, with long parallel streets bay, and shorter perpendicular (they curiously have names in German). The main street is Front Street, where there are plenty of (tax free) shopping, the historical museum of the city and the Catholic Church of San Martin de Tours. The central location is Wathey Square, where is the Palace of Justice (Court House). In the back is Back Street, where the Tourist Market (a market where you can buy handicrafts), and before him the New Testament Baptist Church. The city is a shopper"s paradise, as everything is tax free, so this is the main attraction for tourism. The strategic location of St. Maarten in the Caribbean makes it an international commercial center of first order, so its harbor is vital to its economy. Dr. AC Wathey Pier has cargo port and modern cruise terminal (John Craane Cruise Terminal), receiving 1.5 million tourists annually. This has the tax free shopping and Harbour Point Village Water Taxi service connecting the terminal to the city center, on the pier Captain Hodge Wharf.
