Roland, or Orlando, is a European hero, a legendary knight said to be the nephew of Charlemagne, and died heroically in 778 in Roncesvalles in the Pyrenees. From the fifteenth century, his image has adorned many European squares in Europe, as a symbol of freedom and independence. Roland traveled in order to the kingdom of Charlemagne powerful and confirm its presence in other countries. During one of them he went to Dubrovnik where he changed his name to Orlando. Get up super early! I was there at 9am and it was a nightmare, everyone was there, jostling to take a picture with Orlando, but I returned the next day at 6 am and was alone with the street cleaners !

Rolland, connu en Croatie sous le nom d´Orlando, est un héros européen, le légendaire chevalier dont on dit qu´il était le neveu de Charlemagne, et qui est mort héroïquement à Roncevalles dans les Pyrénées en 778. Depuis le XVème siècle, son image orne beaucoup de places centrales en Europe, comme un symbole de liberté et d´indépendance. Entre tous les voyages qu´a fait Rolland pour maintenir la puissance de Charlemagne et confirmer la présence de l´empereur dans les contrées les plus lointaines, l´un d´eux fut à Dubrovnik, où il changea son nom pour Orlando. La colonne le représente avec son armure et ses armes de chevalier. Elle se trouve au bout de la rue principale, et si tu veux la voir avec moins de 100 personnes autour, il faudra y aller aux aurores, du moins en été. J´ai tenté à 9h du matin et c´était l´enfer, puis y suis retournée à 6h du matin le lendemain, et pas un chat !

Between all trips What Rolland made to maintain the power of Charlemagne and confirm the presence of the emperor in the most remote areas, one of them was in Dubrovnik, where he changed his name to Orlando. Column represents with his armor and his weapons of knight. It is at the end of the main street, and if you want to see with less than 100 people around, it will go at dawn, at least in summer. I tried at 9am and it was hell, then went back at 6am the next day, and not a cat!

Rolland, conocido en Croacia como Orlando, es un héroe, el legendario caballero que se dice que era el sobrino de Carlomagno, y que murió heroicamente en Roncevalles en los Pirineos en el año 778. Desde el siglo XV, su imagen adorna muchos lugares en el centro de Europa, como un símbolo de la libertad y la independencia. Entre todos los viajes realizados por Rolland para mantener el poder de Carlomagno y confirmar la presencia del emperador en los reinos más distantes, uno de ellos fue Dubrovnik, donde cambió su nombre por el de Orlando. La columna representa su armadura y las armas de un caballero. Se encuentra al final de la calle principal y siempre está llena de turistas.
