Eglise Saint Martin

1 review of Eglise Saint Martin

It is also very interesting to visit their caves, or the little train that goes to La Rhune

The church of Sare is situated in one of the prettiest villages in France. I recommend you visit the small cemetery surrounding the church, and to get into it, you have to go through it. The interior is beautiful, with a huge gallery made of wood, which is so typical of French Basque churches. The musty smell, however, can be quite unbearable. On the tower of the church there is an interesting quote in Basque which says: "Pray guziek kolpatzen gizona dute azkenekoak du hobirat egortzen". This means something like: "all hours hurt the man, the last sends him to the grave." Sara was once the capital of smuggling, it is a small town of just 2,200 inhabitants, but very touristy.
