Theatre of Epidaurus

13 reviews of Theatre of Epidaurus

Acoustics

This is a large model of numerous Greek theatres and is very well preserved. It was built by Polykleitos at the end of the 4th century BC to host Asclepeia, a contest in honour of the doctor's god Asclepius. For its construction, 24 meters of the terrain's natural slope was used to build a shell with a diameter of 120 meters. In total, it could hold up to 15,000 spectators in two types of seats. The first being those for local townsfolk, and the second for political personalities, with backs and armrests. It was only six hours by boat from Athens and close to Aegina and Argos, which contributed to its importance.
