One of the weaknesses of the paradise that is New Zealand is the internet connection. It's slow and often expensive outside of big cities. Finding a free wifi connection is a long shot - bars and cafes rarely offer it. You're better off going to a public library, and you can often see internet users camped in them. But some cafes do have wifi. I particularly like the Viva, located in Auckland at 159 Symonds St Newton Street between Mt Eden and the delightful neighbourhood of Point Chevalier. The Viva is run by New Zealanders of Chinese origin, and in addition to offering free Internet as a service, has superb cuisine at affordable prices. It's a quiet cafe, making it the perfect spot for the traveler who needs a comfortable, pleasant place to bring their laptop and do some work. Obviously the author of this piece hasn't been to every cafe in the country, but I can wholeheartedly recommend Viva.
This is a great Japanese restaurant that is pretty cheap (dinner menus cost about € 8 and at noon about 6 €), specializing in Teppanyaki, sushi and sashimi, prepared in front of the people. The owners are very friendly and are always at your disposal.
Gloria Jeans coffee franchise is a Starbucks type, but, in my opinion, with much higher quality and taste when it comes to decorating the coffees. They always offer magazines and newspapers of the same day, and some types of French or Italian coffee that is less similar to the typical American taste.
A Korean restaurant in the commercial and financial area of Auckland that is always full because it has unbeatable prices; There you can find an Asian buffet at noon for 5 €, and Korean barbecue for a little more. The staff is very friendly and the décor is understated.
The owners are Korean, but their menu is made up mostly of Japanese food, specializing in Teriyaki, Sushi, Katsu Don, chicken, pork or beef. They have 2 restaurants, one near the University and one on Quuen st 430, next to the IMAX cinema. It came out to be more than just cheap at € 8 for a full menu with miso soup, salad, salmon teriyaki and chicken teriyaki with rice.
