The best things to do in Ceský Krumlov

Built on a promontory along the river Vltava, the castle is one of the first must-see attractions in
Cesky Krumlov
for anyone who
visits the Czech city. And it's no wonder. With 40 buildings it's the second largest castle in the Czech Republic and one of the largest in Central Europe. Do not miss the Palace gardens, the Pit of the Bears and the Tower of the Palace, some of the top
Cesky Krumlov attractions. Other interesting rooms are the Hall of Masks, the Baroque Theatre and the halls of Pila Bridge.

Next to the castle is the
church of San Vito, one of the essential things to do in Cesky Krumlov. In the Gothic style, its large octagonal tower competes with the Red Tower Palace. Below the castle in the medieval quarter of Lateran you'll find more interesting places to visit in Cesky Krumlov such as the Budejovice door (the only survivor of nine gates in the walls of the city), and the church of San Justo. In the Place de la Concorde is the Town Hall and the monument to the Virgin in memorial to the end of the plague of 1716.

Other things to see in Cesky Krumlov are the numerous museums and galleries, such as the Regional Museum, the Museum of History and Architectural Arts, or Egon Schiele Art Centrum, dedicated to the work of the famous Austrian painter. In the basement of City Hall you'll find one the city's major highlights, the Museum of Torture, which houses instruments and documents from the past.

And if you want to escape the city, one of the most popular excursions from Cesky Krumlov is the Šumava National Park with glacial lakes, marshes, and wild rivers. Other stuff to do in Cesky Krumlov include visiting the artificial Schwarzenberg Canal, built in the eighteenth century to transport firewood from the forests of Šumava, and the Plešné and Plechý lakes.
