Cities in Oulu
Oulu
(1)
Oulu is a town in the Finnish region of Ostrobothnia. It has a population of about 140,000 people, making it the 6th biggest city in Finland and most of the northern half of Finland. It is the leading city in northern Finland, and has a technology park housing the University of Oulu. The entire province of Oulu was, from the geographical point of view, a transition zone between north and south, which is saying that the demarcation is natural between Lapland and Southern Lakes region. The foundation of Oulu was from August 8, 1605 by King Charles IX of Sweden before the castle was constructed on the island of Linnansaari. Then it spread on land, after peace agreements with the Russians, but had the threat of a possible attack in the zone via the main east-west shipping channel, the river Oulu. One of the origins of the name Oulu is a word in the Sami language that means flood, but there are other ideas as wel. The main points of interest in the city are The Oulu City Hall, the theater is a contemporary building and the statue of the police in front of the market building.
Nature Reserves in Kuusamo
Oulanka National Park
Oulanka National Park is in Finnish Lapland near Kuusamo. The first thing I have to say is that if you decide to make the 80km long route it would be much better in summer since in mid-October it was very snowy and the thermometer reached 15 degrees below zero. Crazy! Especially when all you are the houses that have no hot water. You can choose to camp and die too! Hahaha. No, seriously summer's best in addition to carrying less in your backpack and being able to bathe in the river (though it is surely too cold). Also in Autumn the days are quite short and in winter there are no more than 4 hours of daylight (which are still dark), and you have no time to get from booth to booth. If you just want to spend a day you can also make a short route of 8km. It is a gorgeous park where you can lose yourself in the forests which are home to more than 500 different plants and many animals such as bears, lynxes and Arctic wolves.
Islands in Oulu
Pikisaari
Pikisaari is a beautiful island in the city of Oulu Oulu specifically right on the river. It's very famous because it's home to a community of dozens of artists and craftsmen. The old factory buildings on the island have been renovated to be these artists' headquarters. The Museum of the sea man's house is the oldest building in Oulu. There are some other museums and galleries. The truth is that their houses remind me of one I saw in Hamina one time. It was all wood and made up of different colors. Pikisaari can be seen from the island where the theater is in Oulu, and you can get to it from a bridge that connects the island with land. It's a really cool place that you should try to see if you're in the area.
Cathedrals in Oulu
Oulu Cathedral
The Oulu Cathedral is an Evangelical Lutheran cathedral and the seat of the Diocese of Oulu in the heart of the city. The church was constructed in the year 1777 as a tribute to King Gustav III of Sweden and named after his wife as Magdalena Sophia Church. The wooden structures burned in the fire that occurred in Oulu in 1822. The church was reconstructed on the old remains, as designed by the architect Carl Ludvig Engel. The restoration finished in the year 1832 but the tower was not set up until the year 1845.
Theaters in Oulu
Theatre of Oulu
The Theatre of the city of Oulu in Vänmanninsaari island in the Firth of Oulu is near the commercial center of the city and next to the market. There is also a bridge connecting an island that is Pikisaari, the artistic community. It is the largest theater building in the area, and the interesting thing is that part of the theater is in the water. It was designed by architects Marjatta and Martti Jaatinen and was completed in 1972. Then it was renovated between 2002 and 2004, and during that time, a third space was added. Its total area is now 13900 m2. The building has three new auditoriums that are various sizes: 440 m2, 225 m2, and 165 m2. Each year the theater features 350 performances and around 80,000 people attend each year.
